Cinder Hills OHV Area — Coconino National Forest Dispersed Camping
Cinder Hills OHV Area sits near Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument on the Flagstaff Ranger District, Coconino National Forest. The ground is black cinder, loose and fun, laced with a network of two-tracks and open play areas. Dispersed camping is allowed in the surrounding forest. Pick a spot away from the busy riding zones and you’ll get ponderosa shade and good evening light on the cones. Expect weekend dust and engine noise near the riding areas. Weekdays are quieter and the stars are great.
The cinder can be soft, so airing down helps and a basic recovery kit is smart. Summer fire restrictions are common in northern Arizona. Check Coconino NF alerts before you light anything and plan on a stove. Stay on designated routes, pack out your trash, and verify current motor vehicle use map rules and stay limits with the Forest Service before you roll in. Have a dirty day.
Black cinder, pine shade, and open riding north of Flagstaff.
