Independence Pass

Continental Divide crossing at 12,095 feet — Colorado's highest paved pass with stunning alpine views.

Independence Pass cuts through the Sawatch Range at 12,095 feet, making it Colorado’s highest paved mountain pass. The narrow, winding road offers dramatic views of alpine peaks, ghost towns, and the Continental Divide. Summer brings wildflowers and clear skies, but this route closes completely from late October through Memorial Day due to snow. The eastern approach from Twin Lakes is gentler; the western side drops steeply toward Aspen with tight switchbacks.

Road conditions can deteriorate quickly with afternoon thunderstorms. No services at the summit — just a small parking area and vault toilet. RVs and trailers over 35 feet or 10 feet wide are prohibited. Cell service is nonexistent at the pass itself.
