Camping Municipal de Abra Pampa — Puna de Jujuy Altiplano Stopover
Abra Pampa sits at roughly 3,500 m on the open altiplano and serves as the main service town along Ruta 40 through northern Jujuy. The municipal campground is a fenced yard on the edge of town — flat, windswept, and exactly what you’d expect from a puna stopover: basic toilets, a cold-water tap, and room for a handful of rigs. It’s not pretty, but it’s real and it’s there when you need it. Nights get brutally cold at any time of year — think sub-zero Celsius even in summer. Fill your tank at the YPF station before you hit the sack; it’s the last reliable fuel before La Quiaca.
Access is straightforward off Ruta 40 — paved all the way into town. The campground fills during local feria weekends and the Manca Fiesta festival in October. Cell signal is partial, enough for a WhatsApp check-in. Bring your own firewood or gas; open fires are generally not permitted given the wind and arid conditions.
Puna's last real bed before Bolivia.
