Tamanrasset Municipal Campground — Hoggar Gateway Overland Stopover
Tamanrasset is the overland capital of southern Algeria, and this municipal campground sits on the edge of town as the logical staging point before heading south on the Piste de l’Hoggar toward In Guezzam. It’s a flat, gravel-and-dirt yard with basic ablution blocks, shade shelters, and enough room for overlanding rigs of all sizes. It fills up with trans-Africa convoys in the cooler months — expect a mix of motorcyclists, Land Cruisers, and the odd Unimog. Gendarmerie registration is handled in town; get it done before you arrive at camp. It’s not fancy, but it’s real and it works.
Water is available on-site but verify before relying on it. Fuel, provisions, and serious mechanical help are all in town — this is your last real resupply before In Guezzam, roughly 700 km south. October through March is the window; summer temps here regularly crack 45°C and the piste becomes genuinely life-threatening without serious preparation.
Last real camp before the Sahara takes over.
