Lake Natron — Enkiama Flats Southern Shore Dispersed Camp
Lake Natron’s southern shore near the Enkiama area is where overlanders heading up from Engaruka or cutting across from the Ngorongoro highlands pull off and make camp on the open alkaline flats. The ground is firm salt-crusted hardpan set back from the water’s caustic edge. No facilities, no shade, no signage — just a massive volcanic lake, a sky full of stars, and the active cone of Ol Doinyo Lengai rising to the south. Temperatures spike hard midday; set up early or late. Fire is not practical here — carry a stove.
Access is via the dirt road running south from Ngare Sero village toward the lake edge. The route is passable with a high-clearance 4WD in dry season (June–October). Wet season (March–May) turns approaches muddy and can make the lake flats impassable. No water on-site — tank up in Ngare Sero or Karatu. This is NCA-adjacent territory; carry your park entry documentation.
