Cima Dome — Mojave’s Gentle Giant Volcanic Shield Viewpoint

Point of Interest

Cima Dome is one of those places that sneaks up on you. It doesn’t look dramatic from the road, but when you realize you’re staring at a 1,500-foot-tall volcanic shield — one of the most perfectly symmetrical in North America — and you’re ringed by the densest stand of Joshua trees on the planet, it hits different. The dome is an old erosion-resistant granite intrusion sitting in the middle of Mojave National Preserve, accessible via Cima Road off I-15. The Joshua tree forest up here is legitimately world-class, no exaggeration.

Cima Road is maintained dirt and gravel — most rigs handle it fine in dry conditions. The elevation sits around 5,500 feet, so it can get cold fast after dark. There’s no trailhead infrastructure, just the dome itself and the trees. Worth a dedicated stop on any Mojave Road run — it’s roughly 20 miles north of Mid Hills and ties cleanly into the central desert segment.

Densest Joshua tree forest on Earth.
