Río Palena — Carretera Austral Backdoor Valley Floor Dispersed Camp
The Río Palena cuts a broad, braided course through the Palena River Valley near the Argentina-Chile border corridor, and where it swings wide it leaves gravel and sand bars big enough to camp a small convoy. This is textbook Patagonian dispersed camping — no signage, no facilities, no fee, just cold clean river noise, lenga beech forest on the hillsides, and the kind of silence that reminds you why you bought the rig. Expect genuine isolation; the nearest fuel and supplies are in Futaleufú to the west or Esquel to the northeast.
Access is via unmaintained frontier tracks connecting Paso Vergara and the Palena valley — passable in a capable 4WD but read the river levels before committing. The valley floor can flood fast after rain, and the tracks turn to deep mud. Best season is November through March. No trash service — pack it all out. Argentina-Chile border zones may require carrying your vehicle documents and passports at all times.
