Rangdum Gompa — Suru Valley Monastery Above the Frozen Plateau
Rangdum Gompa sits on a rocky outcrop rising sharply from the flat, semi-arid valley floor between Kargil and Padum, roughly halfway along the Zanskar Valley Road. Founded around the 18th century and belonging to the Gelugpa school, the whitewashed monastery houses around 30 monks and commands 360-degree views of the surrounding glaciated peaks, including the Nun-Kun massif. For overlanders grinding the long Kargil-to-Padum run, this is the definitive cultural and photographic stop — arriving in the golden hour with the monastery glowing against dark volcanic rock and snowy summits is something you won’t forget.
The road to Rangdum is passable by most 4WD vehicles once the Penzi La approach is clear, typically June through October. There is a small village nearby with basic tea stalls but no fuel. The monastery is open to respectful visitors; remove shoes before entering prayer halls. No formal entry fee but donations are welcomed. Cell service here is essentially zero — you’re on your own.
