Messum Crater — Volcanic Ring Plain Dispersed Camp
Messum Crater is one of the most geologically striking places on the entire Namibian coast, and overlanders running the Brandberg West to Cape Cross corridor pass right through it. The crater floor is broad, flat, and open — a classic dispersed pitch on hard-packed gravel and desert scrub inside the outer ring wall. Expect zero infrastructure, zero people, and one of the finest dark-sky ceilings in southern Africa. Welwitschia plants dot the crater floor; some specimens here are thousands of years old. Vehicle capacity is effectively unlimited by space but access keeps numbers naturally low.
Access is via rough 4WD track from the D2342 and requires a permit from the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism — arrange in Swakopmund or Henties Bay before you head out. Soft sand and sharp lava rock sections demand aired-down tyres and recovery gear. Season: April through October. Summer heat and occasional flash floods in the drainage channels make wet-season entry genuinely risky.
Ancient caldera floor camp, zero services.
