Khunjerab National Park — Shimshal River Confluence Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

Where the Shimshal River spills into the Hunza River valley corridor, a broad gravel bench sits just off the Karakoram Highway near the Shimshal Valley junction track. The KKH runs tight along cliff walls here, but this flat offers enough room for several vehicles, dramatic views up toward the Shimshal gorge, and cold river air that’ll drop temps fast after sunset. No facilities whatsoever — this is raw high-mountain camping at around 9,000 ft elevation. Glacier-fed water nearby but treat everything.

Access is straightforward from the KKH — no technical driving required to reach the flat itself, though the Shimshal Valley track heading east demands 4WD. Seasonal: June through September is the window before snowfall cuts things short. Border security patrols the KKH corridor regularly; have your passports and permits ready. No fires — firewood doesn’t exist at this elevation and altitude means fires are restricted in the national park buffer zone.
