Montagu Pass Summit — Victorian-Era Toll Road and Outeniqua Mountain Viewpoint
Montagu Pass is the real deal — a hand-built 1847 masterpiece of dry-stone retaining walls and curved gradients that puts every modern engineered road to shame. The summit sits at roughly 850m and opens up a panorama south over George, the coastal lowlands, and on a clear day, the Indian Ocean horizon. The old toll house at the base is still standing. This isn’t a novelty drive — the gravel is well-maintained but narrow, and big rigs need to take it slow on the switchbacks. It’s a legitimate historical artifact you can actually drive.
Access from George via Cradock Street heading north — signed for Montagu Pass. The road is passable in high-clearance 2WD under normal conditions but becomes sketchy in heavy rain when runoff sheets across the bends. No formal facilities at the summit itself. Traffic is light on weekdays. A short walk from the upper bends gives you the best unobstructed view south — worth the stop.
1847 gravel pass. Stone walls. Ocean views.
