Outeniqua Nature Reserve — Herold’s Bay Road Rest Camp
Tucked into the fynbos-covered lower slopes of the Outeniqua range south of George, this CapeNature rest camp gives you a proper established base rather than a rough roadside pull-off. Expect basic but functional sites — braai stands, cold-water ablutions, and enough space to spread out without being on top of your neighbours. The mountain backdrop is real and the fynbos birding at dusk is legitimately good. Proximity to both the N12 and the old Montagu Pass gravel road makes this a natural overnight stop before or after running the pass.
Access off the N12 or via George itself is straightforward on tar. Best in autumn through spring — Western Cape summers can be hot and dry, with fire restrictions often in force December through March. Confirm current restrictions with CapeNature before lighting anything. Book ahead during South African school holidays; this one fills up faster than it looks like it should.
