Outeniqua Nature Reserve — Montagu Pass Fynbos Plateau Dispersed Camp
The Montagu Pass is one of the oldest surviving mountain passes in South Africa, hand-cut in the 1840s, and the gravel road that climbs it still threads through dense fynbos and indigenous forest on the slopes of the Outeniqua range. Along the upper reaches of the pass, overlanders have long used graded pullouts and forestry verge areas as informal overnight spots — wide enough for a rooftop tent rig, with sweeping views south toward George and the coast. It’s quiet except for birds, the air is clean, and the stars are genuinely dark out here. No bins, no ablutions, no water.
Access via the old Montagu Pass road off the N12 north of George — confirm the gate status at the George Municipality office or with Cape Nature before heading up, as access can be restricted during fire season or after heavy rain softens the gravel. 4WD not required but high-clearance preferred on the upper sections. Cell signal drops to nothing above the treeline. Summer fire bans apply across the reserve.
Old pass road, fynbos ridgeline, zero people.
