Ruta de los Seismiles — Laguna Verde de Fiambalá Puna Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

This is raw Puna camping at its most elemental. Park on firm volcanic gravel along the northern or eastern shore of Laguna Verde, a shallow saline lake fed by snowmelt at roughly 4,300 m above sea level. The water goes a deep teal-green from mineral content. Wind is relentless by mid-morning — stake everything. No facilities, no signage, no other overlanders except during peak Argentine summer. Fire is pointless and prohibited at this altitude; cook on gas only. Nights are extreme even in January, so plan for sub-zero temps regardless of season.

Access is via the ripio and dirt track climbing west from Fiambalá toward the Argentine-Chilean border at Paso Pircas Negras. The last 40 km demand a proper 4WD with good ground clearance and extra fuel — the nearest pump is back in Fiambalá, roughly 100 km east. Carry water; the lake water is not potable. Best window is November through March before winter storms close the high road.
