Clifton Historical District — Copper Era Mining Town Gateway to the Gila Box
Clifton is one of the oldest continuously occupied mining towns in Arizona, jammed into a narrow canyon where Chase Creek meets the San Francisco River. The old territorial jail is literally carved into the cliffside rock — worth five minutes on foot. The town is compact, real, and zero percent tourist-polished. Gas up here before you drop into the Gila Box corridor; it’s your last reliable fuel heading south toward Safford on the BDR connector route. There’s a Dollar General and a couple of small markets for last-minute resupply.
The drive into Clifton from the north via US-191 is spectacular — the Coronado Trail drops off the Mogollon Rim through tight switchbacks. Cell signal is spotty through the canyon. Elevation sits around 3,500 ft, so summers are hot but survivable. The Phelps Dodge smelter stack still dominates the skyline — a reminder this place ran on copper, not tourism.
