Monongahela National Forest — Greenbrier River Headwaters Upper Fork Dispersed Camp
This is deep Appalachian forest camping — hardwoods thick overhead, the sound of moving water nearby, and zero campground infrastructure. The upper Greenbrier drainage sits in Monongahela National Forest and offers legitimate dispersed camping on Forest Service land along forest roads in the Pocahontas and Greenbrier districts. Sites are flat pullouts off gravel FR spurs, primitive as it gets — no fire rings, no trash cans, nothing but trees and ridge. Fire restrictions apply during dry stretches, so check with the Greenbrier District Ranger before you light anything. It gets busy during fall color and deer season but is largely empty the rest of the year.
Access is via a mix of WV Route 92 and numbered forest roads heading east from Lewisburg. High-clearance rigs will have more options. Most forest roads here are rough dirt and gravel — passable in a capable 4WD but tight and rut-prone after heavy rain. No signage marks dispersed sites — know your unit boundaries before you pull in. 14-day stay limit applies per standard USFS policy.
Primitive Appalachian forest camp, no frills.
