Cherokee National Forest — Unicoi Mountains Dispersed Camp
Pull off the pavement and you’re in old-growth hardwood and pine country on the Tennessee-North Carolina state line. The Unicoi Mountains section of Cherokee National Forest allows dispersed camping along established forest roads — no designated sites, no fees, no reservations. Ground is typically soft, flat spots are findable near forest road junctions, and the canopy keeps things cool even in summer. You’re in TAT country here, and rigs of all sizes run through on their way to or from Tellico Plains. Cell signal is essentially gone once you drop off the main roads.
Access is via FR 217 and connecting spur roads off US-64 west of Robbinsville. High-clearance is useful but not required on most of these roads in dry conditions. Stay 100 feet from streams and roads per USFS rules. Fire restrictions fluctuate — check the Cherokee NF website before you light anything. Best window is mid-April through November; mud season can be brutal in early spring.
No-fee forest dispersed on the TAT corridor.
