Carretera Austral — Río Cisnes Valley Floor Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

The Río Cisnes cuts a broad, braided valley through the northern Aysén Region, and where the Carretera Austral runs close to the river between Villa Amengual and La Tapera, overlanders have long pulled off onto the gravel bars and river terraces for free dispersed camping. The setting is legitimately stunning — lenga beech forests, jagged Andes backdrop, and a river cold enough to chill your beer in thirty seconds. You’re on your own here: no toilets, no fire rings, no rangers checking passes. Bring everything you need.

Access is straightforward — the Carretera Austral is gravel through this section, passable by any high-clearance vehicle in dry conditions but can get greasy in the frequent Patagonian rain. River levels rise fast after heavy rain, so don’t camp too close to the water’s edge. Best season is November through March. Fires are subject to CONAF restrictions — check current fire ban status before lighting anything. Cell service is essentially nonexistent through this valley.
