Strzelecki Track — Montecollina Bore Station Creek Flat Dispersed Camp
This is the real deal: a wide, flat dirt pull-off on the eastern edge of the Strzelecki Desert, used by overlanders pushing the full track between Innamincka and Lyndhurst. The ground is hard-packed red clay and gibber gravel, exposed in every direction with no shade and zero infrastructure. You’re surrounded by low mulga scrub and the occasional saltbush — silence is total, and night skies out here are genuinely extraordinary. No facilities, no signs, no firewood — pack everything in and out.
Access is directly off the Strzelecki Track, negotiable by capable 2WD in dry conditions but heavily rutted after rain — check conditions before departing Innamincka. Montecollina Bore itself is a heritage artesian bore and worth a look. Carry sufficient water and fuel for the full run — no services between Innamincka and Lyndhurst beyond this point. Fire restrictions apply during total fire ban periods in SA.
