Mohale Dam — Lesotho Highlands Water Project Southern Reservoir Viewpoint
Mohale Dam is the second arch dam of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, impounding the Senqunyane River in a steep-sided valley deep in the Maluti Mountains. At roughly 145 metres tall it’s one of the tallest dams in Africa, and the drive in across the LHDA construction road gives you views that’ll stop you cold — emerald water hemmed by brown basalt ridges, with no other vehicle in sight most days. The LHDA maintains a small visitor infrastructure here including a guesthouse and limited fuel availability through the project compound — verify fuel supply before departure from Maseru or Thaba-Tseka, because it is not guaranteed.
The sealed LHDA access road connects Mohale to Katse Dam to the north and continues south toward Semonkong and Thaba-Tseka. Road condition varies seasonally — winter snowfall above 3,000m can close high passes without warning. A 4WD is strongly recommended year-round; snow chains are worth carrying May through August. No casual tourist facilities — this is a working infrastructure site.
Tallest arch dam in Africa, hidden in the Malutis.
