Bloedkoppie — Skeleton Coast Granite Inselberg and Desert Viewpoint
Bloedkoppie — Afrikaans for ‘blood head’ — is a striking isolated granite kopje that erupts from the flat gravel plains of the northern Skeleton Coast Park. The reddish-orange hue of the exposed rock at dusk gives the place its name and its reputation. This is desert wilderness at its most raw: no facilities, no shade structures, no other vehicles. Wildlife crossing the surrounding plains includes brown hyena, black-backed jackal, and desert-adapted elephant on seasonal migration routes between the Hoarusib and Hoanib rivers. The park road from Ugabmund north passes within sight of it, making it a genuine anchor waypoint in an otherwise navigationally featureless stretch.
Access is via the MET-controlled park track inside Skeleton Coast National Park — you must hold a valid NWR permit and enter through Ugabmund or Springbokwasser gate. This section of the park is open to self-drive permit holders in the southern zone. 4WD is non-negotiable. The road surface is corrugated gravel and soft sand in places. No water, no fuel, no signal. Carry full spares and at least 150L of water and fuel before entry.
