Skeleton Coast Park — Ugab River Mouth Southern Flats Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

Pull off the corrugated track inside the Ugab River mouth gate and you’re in one of the most austere landscapes on the planet. The river channel here is dry most of the year — just a wide sandy bed flanked by low dunes and bleached driftwood. Fog rolls in off the Benguela Current most mornings, keeping temperatures wild and visibility near zero before burning off midday. No infrastructure, no shade, no water. Just wind, gravel, and the occasional brown hyena track in the sand. Self-contained rigs only — this is full-desert kit territory.

Access is through the Ugab River Gate on the C34 coastal road, permit required from NWR before entry. The gate closes at a set time; latecomers sleep outside. Verify permit conditions and gate hours directly with Namibia Wildlife Resorts before departure — rules on overnight stops in this southern buffer zone shift seasonally. Keep your rig high-clearance; the river crossing can hold soft sand even in the dry season.

Fog, gravel, and the edge of the world.
