Bara Pani — Deosai Plateau River Ford and Highpoint Viewpoint
Bara Pani sits at roughly 13,500 feet on the Deosai Plains and is the defining crux of any Skardu-to-Astore traverse. The braided river channel here can run wide and deceptively swift in late June and July when snowmelt peaks — vehicles have been swept or high-centered in the crossing more than once. In late July through September the crossing drops to axle-deep or less and the surrounding plateau opens into an enormous bowl of wildflowers, Himalayan brown bears, and sky so big it hurts. The views back toward the Karakoram and forward toward Nanga Parbat’s massif are some of the most raw high-altitude panoramas on the continent.
No signage, no bridge, no ranger at the crossing — you read the water yourself. Tire pressures down, diff lock engaged, walk it first. Snow can close the plateau entirely before mid-June and after mid-October. A Pakistan Wildlife Department permit for Deosai NP is required and checked at the Skardu gate before entry.
