Batopilas River Canyon — Lower Gorge Riverside Dispersed Camp
You earn this one. After dropping thousands of feet down the Batopilas canyon road on a shelf track that’ll have your co-pilot white-knuckling the door, the river flats open up near the colonial mining town of Batopilas. Overlanders have been pulling off on sandy benches along the Río Batopilas for years — flat ground, river access, towering canyon walls on both sides, and zero services. It’s hot down here in summer, cool and stunning in winter. No signage, no facilities, no designated spots — you find a flat, you camp on it.
Access is via the long, rough descent from Creel on the Batopilas road — high-clearance 4WD mandatory, no exceptions. The road is narrow with sheer drop-offs and blind corners. Wet season (July–September) can make this road genuinely dangerous and impassable. Dry season runs November through May. Fuel up completely in Creel — there is no fuel on this descent. Cell service is nonexistent at canyon bottom.
