La Wis Wis Campground — Gifford Pinchot National Forest

La Wis Wis sits where the Muddy Fork meets the Cowlitz River, tucked into old-growth Douglas fir and western red cedar just a few miles west of White Pass. It’s a real campground — paved loops, 119 sites, flush toilets, piped water, fire rings. Popular with families in July and August, but it earns its place in an overlander’s database because it’s the closest developed camp to the eastern White Pass trailhead cluster and puts you in position to run FR 52 and the Goat Rocks fringe the next morning. Host is usually on site mid-season. Fire restrictions apply in dry years — check with Cowlitz Valley Ranger District before you light anything.

Access is paved directly off US-12 at milepost 128.5. Open late May through late September depending on snowpack. Reservation system runs through Recreation.gov — weekends book out weeks in advance in summer. Show up midweek or early season if you want a walk-up site.
