Hwange Main Camp — National Park Headquarters and Wildlife Waterhole Viewpoint

Hwange Main Camp is the official entry point and headquarters of Zimbabwe’s largest national park — a sprawling, semi-arid wilderness holding one of Africa’s densest elephant populations. The camp sits adjacent to Nyamandhlovu Pan, a pumped waterhole famous for pulling in elephant, buffalo, lion, and painted dog, especially during the dry season (May–October) when surface water vanishes elsewhere. A raised viewing platform overlooking the pan is free to use and genuinely spectacular at dawn and dusk. Fuel, basic supplies, and park permits are available here — the last reliable fuel before the deep interior tracks toward Kennedy Vleis and Sinamatella Camp.

Access is via a tar road from Hwange town, roughly 27 km. The park entry gate is managed by Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks). Self-drive permits and campsite bookings must be arranged either at the gate or through ZimParks offices in advance. Cell signal is weak to nonexistent beyond the camp boundary.
