Porto Jofre — End of the Transpantaneira and Jaguar Country Viewpoint

Porto Jofre sits at kilometer 147 of the Transpantaneira, where the dirt track dead-ends at the Cuiabá River. There’s a boat landing, a small floating hotel operation, and a handful of guides running jaguar-spotting skiff trips on the river. This is the most reliable jaguar-viewing spot on the planet — not a gimmick, just geography. The river bends and oxbow lakes here concentrate prey, and the cats know it. Arrive at dawn and watch from the bridge or riverbank. Caiman, giant river otter, and capybara are everywhere.

The final stretch of the Transpantaneira into Porto Jofre can be brutal in wet season (November–April) — wooden bridge planks rot and sag, and the track floods. Dry season (May–October) is the sweet spot. Fuel is not available here — top off in Poconé before you commit to the highway. Cell signal is essentially nonexistent beyond the lodges’ satellite setups.
