Beartown State Park — Beartown Rocks Sandstone Labyrinth

Beartown sits on the Droop Mountain Plateau in Pocahontas County, just off WV-39/92 between Lewisburg and Marlinton. The boardwalk winds through a surreal field of Pottsville sandstone blocks — some the size of houses — split by frost action into a labyrinth of narrow passages draped in hemlock and moss. It’s quiet, weird, and completely free. The kind of place you stop for 30 minutes and end up spending two hours. No fee, no crowds except fall weekends.

Access is paved to the parking area off WV-92. The boardwalk loop is short — under half a mile — but worth every minute. Pull off, stretch your legs, breathe the hemlock air. Cell service is essentially nonexistent out here. Coordinates put you directly on the Lewisburg-to-Parsons corridor, so it’s a natural mid-day stop running the Trans-America Trail northward through the Greenbrier highlands.
