Monongahela National Forest — Greenbrier River Headwaters Dispersed Camp

The upper Greenbrier River drainage inside the Monongahela National Forest is classic TAT country — tight forest roads, creek crossings, and a whole lot of nobody else around. Dispersed camping is permitted throughout the Monongahela on national forest land outside posted closures, and this corridor along FR 204 and connecting roads near Huntersville gives you river flats and ridge-top clearings with big sky at elevation. No developed facilities, no hosts, no charge. Fire rings are DIY; check current fire restrictions with the Marlinton Ranger District before you stack wood.

Access is via WV-39 west of Marlinton or off US-219 north of Huntersville. Roads are maintained gravel to rough dirt depending on season — high-clearance is your friend after rain. The Greenbrier runs high in spring snowmelt; plan water crossings accordingly. Cell service is essentially zero. Best season is May through October; spring mud can lock up the approach roads hard.
