Paso Roballos — Argentina-Chile Border Crossing at the Northern Patagonian Ice Fields

Paso Roballos sits at roughly 1,100 meters on the wind-scoured steppe plateau east of the Northern Patagonian Ice Fields. This is a genuine frontier crossing — no fuel, no services, no cell signal, and the Argentine and Chilean customs posts are minimally staffed and keep limited hours. The scenery is raw: lenga beech forests give way to open pampa with Andean backdrops that’ll stop you mid-sentence. Vehicle traffic is sparse enough that you may sit at the gate waiting for a customs officer to appear. Come prepared.

Access from the Argentine side follows Ruta Provincial 41 from Gobernador Gregores or the junction near Lago Posadas — long stretches of ripio washboard in variable condition. From the Chilean side, the road drops toward Cochrane through steep, rocky terrain requiring high-clearance and ideally 4WD. Crossing hours are typically 0800–2000 in summer; verify with Argentine Gendarmería and Chilean PDI before committing. Do not attempt after recent heavy rain — the approaches bog out fast.
