Max Patch Bald — Appalachian Trail Open Summit Viewpoint

Max Patch sits at roughly 4,629 feet on the Pisgah National Forest boundary between Haywood and Madison counties — one of the most recognizable summit balds on the entire Appalachian Trail. The top is wide open, wind-scoured, and drops your jaw in every direction: the Black Mountains to the east, the Great Smokies to the southwest, and the French Broad River valley cutting through the lowlands below. It’s a legitimate landmark on any Trans-America Trail run through this corridor, sitting close to the FR 1181 gravel approach off NC-1182 out of Hot Springs. Drive or ride the Forest Road to the small NPS parking area and walk five minutes to the top — bring your camera and leave your expectations at the gate.

The access road is gravel, passable by most high-clearance vehicles. The summit is busy on weekends May through October — arrive early or go at golden hour to get it to yourself. Cold, wind, and fog move in fast — dress for it year-round. Parking lot fills by 9 AM on peak weekends.
