Ngorongoro Crater Rim — Simba Campsite

Established Campground

Simba Campsite sits right on the Ngorongoro Crater rim inside the Conservation Area, making it the most accessible and well-documented public camp for overlanders transiting between Arusha, Karatu, and the Rift Valley floor route toward Lake Natron. It’s a public site — meaning tents, rooftop tents, and basic rigs are all welcome without booking a luxury lodge. Expect a handful of basic long-drop toilets, no showers, and shared fire areas. Hyena pressure at night is real — secure all food and gear. It gets busy during peak dry season (June–September), so arrive early or book through the NCAA office in advance.

Access is via the paved Karatu–Lodoare Gate road, then the dirt rim road managed by the NCAA. A valid Conservation Area fee must be paid at the gate — fees change; verify current rates with the NCAA before entry. This is the logical staging point before dropping into the Rift Valley toward Engaruka and Ol Doinyo Lengai. Elevation means cold nights year-round — pack accordingly.
