Baja California Sur — Arroyo de la Giganta Canyon Floor Dispersed Camp

The Sierra de la Giganta canyon roads between Loreto and Ciudad Insurgentes are some of the most dramatic terrain on the Baja peninsula — steep volcanic walls, cardon cactus forests, and dry arroyo bottoms that beg you to pull off and stay the night. Overlanders have long used wide sandy pullouts along the canyon floor as informal dispersed camps. No facilities, no signs, no fee. Flat sandy ground, shade from canyon walls in the late afternoon, and sky full of stars. Watch for soft sand in the arroyo bottom — aired-down tires are not optional here.

Access is via the graded dirt road network branching off Mexico Federal Highway 1 between Loreto and Ciudad Insurgentes — rough in spots, washboard in others, and occasionally washed out after summer chubascos. Best run October through April. No water on-site; carry all you need from Loreto or Insurgentes. Cell signal is nonexistent once you drop into the canyon. Low-clearance rigs will struggle on the upper switchbacks.
