Chatyr-Kul Lake — Southern Shore Plateau Dispersed Camp

Chatyr-Kul sits in a wide treeless basin just north of the Chinese border, ringed by the Tian Shan ridgeline. The southern shore offers flat, open ground where overlanders pull off the gravel track and camp directly on the steppe. No facilities, no shade, no crowds — just yaks, migratory birds, and views that’ll reset your brain. Wind is relentless; stake everything. Water from the lake is not safe to drink untreated. Bring all fuel from Naryn — there’s nothing out here.

Access is via the A363 highway toward Torugart Pass. The road is passable gravel, manageable in a capable 2WD but better in 4WD when wet. The lake sits inside a nature reserve — no permit has historically been required for transit camping, but verify current rules with Naryn Oblast administration before arrival. Season is June through September; outside those months snow and ice make it impassable.
