Liard River Valley — NWT Highway 1 Corridor Dispersed Camp near Checkpoint

Between Fort Simpson and the Nahanni Butte access road, NWT Highway 1 traces the Liard River valley through dense boreal spruce and birch. A handful of well-worn pullouts on gravel benches above the river flood plain have served northbound rigs for years — flat ground, no facilities, and serious northern silence. Fire risk varies by season; check with GNWT before lighting up. Expect mosquitoes from June through August in force. Wildlife is real out here — bears, moose, and bison all travel this corridor.

Access is straightforward on the paved and chip-seal Highway 1, but the side tracks leading to river-level spots can be soft clay after rain. Season runs June through September — spring breakup makes low spots impassable and fall freeze-up can catch rigs unprepared. No cell signal. Self-sufficient rigs only.
