Hontoon Island Backcountry Access

Old Florida island adventure

Expert

Hontoon Island sits in the St. Johns River like a forgotten piece of Old Florida, accessible only by boat or the sketchy 4WD route that floods regularly but stays passable for those willing to push through knee-deep water and navigate around centuries-old Timucuan shell mounds. The route starts near DeLand and follows a maze of hunting club roads through flooded timber, cypress swamps, and high ground that the Timucuan Indians used as seasonal camps. You’ll cross several sloughs and navigate around massive live oaks draped in Spanish moss, with the constant sound of gators splashing and birds calling from the canopy.

This is expert-level stuff when wet — expect deep water crossings, soft sand, and routes that disappear completely during high water. Stock 4WD won’t cut it; you need aggressive tires, a snorkel or at least good waterproofing, and recovery gear. Dry season only (December-May), and even then check water levels before heading out. No cell service once you’re committed. The reward is camping on a 1,650-acre island that feels like the Florida your great-grandfather knew, complete with ancient shell mounds and some of the best bass fishing in the state.
