Benzilan Town Guesthouse Compound — Lancang River Canyon Basecamp
Benzilan is a small Tibetan-Han border town sitting at the Lancang River confluence where the Sichuan–Tibet Highway crosses into Yunnan. Several family-run guesthouses (客栈, kèzhàn) here allow vehicle camping in their walled courtyards — the most dependable overnight option on this entire canyon corridor. Expect basic concrete yards, a squat toilet block, cold-water wash, and a communal dining room knocking out yak butter tea and noodle soup. It’s utilitarian, it’s warm in winter relative to the canyon winds outside, and the owners know the road conditions north toward Deqin.
This is a critical staging point before the steep, often icy climb toward Cizhong and the Meili Snow Mountain approach. Access is fully paved off the main G214. Cell signal is intermittent China Mobile. Fuel the rig here — the next confirmed station is Deqin, roughly 100 km north on punishing switchbacks. Verify which guesthouse is currently accepting vehicles before you arrive; turnover is real.
Last flat sleep before the Meili climb.
