Lancang River Canyon — Benzilan Gorge Roadside Dispersed Camp

The Sichuan–Tibet Highway between Benzilan and Deqin follows the Lancang River (upper Mekong) through a sheer canyon that drops thousands of metres from the surrounding Hengduan ranges. Flat ground is scarce, but established pull-offs exist where road crews and truckers have camped for decades — gravel shoulders wide enough for a 4WD and a rooftop tent, with the river noise drowning everything else out. No facilities, no signage, no fee — just river, rock, and the occasional convoy of prayer flags on the cliff face above you.

Access is via the G214 national highway, paved but with rockfall zones and aggressive gradients. Altitude here runs roughly 1,900–2,400 m so cold nights are possible even in summer. Flash rockfall is a real concern after rain — pick a site clear of overhanging cliffs. Cell signal is patchy to nonexistent through the deep gorge sections. Best window is May–October; the road can be disrupted by landslides any time of year — check with locals in Benzilan or Deqin before committing.
