Trans-America Trail — Tonapah to Ely via the Nevada Basin and Range High Desert

Sierra Madre hidden above the Divide Basin.

Moderate

Most people blow through southern Wyoming on I-80 at 80 mph without knowing the Sierra Madre Range is sitting right there — an island of ponderosa, aspen, and granite rising above the red-dirt Divide Basin. The Wyoming BDR South Segment runs from Rawlins south through the Great Divide Basin on graded dirt before climbing into the Medicine Bow–Routt National Forest via Battle Pass (10,900 ft) and dropping off the southern escarpment toward Encampment and the Colorado line. The Divide Basin section is fast, open, and brutally exposed — wind-scoured two-track with antelope running parallel and no shelter for 60 miles. Battle Pass is the payoff: tall pines, a historic mining district, and the chain of high meadows above Encampment River that most Wyoming residents have never seen.

Moderate difficulty — a bone-stock high-clearance 4WD handles the route in dry conditions, but the Divide Basin two-track turns to greasy clay after rain and will stop you flat. Fuel in Rawlins and Saratoga; nothing reliable in between. No permits required on the national forest or BLM sections. Best run June through September — Battle Pass holds snow well into June some years. Cell service is nonexistent across the Divide Basin and spotty in the national forest. Dispersed camping throughout the Medicine Bow–Routt NF sections. This is the BDR at its most honest: nobody out here, no guardrails, no services — just high-desert Wyoming doing what it does.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock 4Runner or similar SUV handle this route without modifications?

Yes — a stock 4WD high-clearance vehicle like a 4Runner, Tacoma, or Wrangler can run this route. Aired-down tires help on the rocky two-track sections through the Sierra Madre, but no lockers or lifts are required for most conditions.

When does this route typically open in spring and is it driveable after rain?

June is the reliable open window — snow can linger at the 10,900-ft high points well into May. After heavy rain the high-desert clay sections near Divide Basin turn into a greasy mess that'll bog even capable rigs, so check conditions before committing.

Do you need any permits or fees to run this route?

No permit is required for the BLM sections. If you're camping inside Medicine Bow–Routt National Forest boundaries, standard forest rules apply — no fee for dispersed sites, but check with the BLM Rawlins Field Office for any current fire restrictions before you go.

What's the hardest section and what should I actually expect there?

The Sierra Madre climb is the most demanding stretch — loose rock, steep two-track, and tight tree lines up near the high ridgeline. It's not a white-knuckle situation in dry conditions, but it rewards slow, deliberate driving and punishes overconfidence on the descents.

How far is the longest gas gap on this route and is there water available out there?

Rawlins is your last reliable fuel stop heading south — Encampment is small and its fuel availability isn't guaranteed, so top off in Rawlins and carry extra. Water sources exist in the Sierra Madre but treat everything; the Divide Basin section is bone dry, so carry at least 5–7 gallons onboard.
