Tatla Lake Road System

Real cowboy country in the Chilcotin plateau

Easy

The Tatla Lake Road System branches off Highway 20 into a spider web of ranch roads, cattle trails, and old logging spurs that penetrate deep Chilcotin plateau country. Main route runs 85 kilometers from Tatla Lake village north to the Dean River crossing, passing working ranches where fourth-generation cowboys still move cattle on horseback. Side trails lead to hidden lakes, abandoned homesteads, and viewpoints overlooking the glacier-carved valleys where Coast Range peaks pierce the western horizon.

Easy to moderate with some technical sections on steeper side routes requiring 4WD and careful tire placement. Stock high-clearance vehicles handle main routes fine, but rocky creek crossings and muddy ranch approaches demand attention. Best June through October when ranching operations are active and roads maintained. Respect private property—many routes cross grazing leases. Fuel in Tatla Lake, carry water, and camp respectfully. This is real working ranch country where overlanders experience authentic BC interior life.
