Richtersveld Sendelingsdrift to Vioolsdrif — Orange River Canyon Desert Rim Track

Pontoon crossing into South Africa's volcanic deep end.

Expert

The Sendelingsdrift pontoon crossing is one of the few places in southern Africa where you still load your rig onto a flat-bottomed barge and push off into a chocolate-brown river while ostriches stare at you from the Namibian bank. From there, the track climbs into the Richtersveld’s volcanic heart — quiver trees leaning off copper-coloured ridges, halfmens succulents pointing north like sun-worshipping sentinels, and corrugated basalt two-tracks that punish everything bolted loosely to your chassis. The route runs south along the Orange River canyon rim to Vioolsdrif, threading through the Richtersveld Transfrontier Park’s least-visited interior sections with zero shade and zero rescue infrastructure.

This is expert-level terrain requiring a stripped-down, properly built rig with a long-range tank — there is no fuel between Sendelingsdrift and Vioolsdrif, a distance that can stretch to 120 km of slow going in low range. Travelling solo is genuinely reckless; go with at least two vehicles and carry recovery gear, a sat communicator, and a minimum of 10 litres of water per person per day. Best window is April through September — summer temperatures exceed 50°C and the tracks turn to a furnace. No formal permit is required for the public roads, but the SANParks Richtersveld section requires a park entry fee.

Frequently asked questions

Can a lightly modified 4x4 like a stock Hilux handle this route?

No. You need a modified 4WD with a lift, skid plates, and aggressive all-terrain or mud-terrain tires. The basalt track sections are loose, steep, and unforgiving on standard suspension and factory underbody protection.

When is the Richtersveld actually passable and what kills access?

April through September is the window — cooler temps and drier conditions. Summer (October–March) brings extreme heat topping 50°C and flash flood risk in the Orange River canyon that can make crossings and low-lying tracks genuinely dangerous.

What permits do you need and where do you get them?

You need a SANParks entry permit for Richtersveld National Park, booked through the SANParks website or by calling the park directly. The Sendelingsdrift pontoon crossing also requires prior coordination with park staff — it does not operate on demand, so confirm crossing times before you leave Springbok.

What's the hardest section of the route and what should I actually expect?

The canyon rim tracks above the Orange River are the crux — narrow shelves of loose basalt with significant exposure, steep off-camber angles, and no room for error or recovery from a sliding vehicle. One bad line can put you over the edge, and there is no rescue infrastructure out here.

How far is the nearest fuel and can I do this route without a long-range tank?

Springbok is your last guaranteed fuel stop before you enter the park, and there is zero fuel inside Richtersveld. At 121km of hard technical driving — which burns far more fuel than highway — a standard tank is not enough; carry minimum 200 liters total capacity or fit a long-range tank before attempting this route.
