Yanbaru Forest Road – Kunigami Highland Circuit

Okinawa's jungle overland — not a beach in sight.

Moderate

Most people think Okinawa means beach resorts and coral reefs. They’re not wrong, but they’re missing the north. Up in Kunigami-son, the Yanbaru forest road network punches into dense subtropical jungle that UNESCO saw fit to protect as a World Natural Heritage site in 2021. The tracks here wind past Daisekirinzan’s limestone formations, cross seasonal streams draining off the Nishime-dake ridgeline, and drop you into pockets of forest so thick the canopy kills your GPS signal. Yanbaru Kuina — the flightless rail found nowhere else on Earth — will scatter across the track in front of you if you’re moving early enough.

Soft mud and exposed limestone ledges are the main obstacles; nothing technically savage, but slick wet rock in the rainy season will catch out anything on street tires. High-clearance 4WD with all-terrain rubber is the minimum. The forest roads are open to permitted vehicles, but access into core protected zones requires coordination with the Okinawa Prefecture forestry office — sort that before you go. Best season is October through March, outside typhoon and heavy rain months. Fuel up in Nago; there’s nothing in Kunigami worth betting on. Cell service drops to zero fast. What you get out of it is unlike anywhere else in Japan — a jungle overland, not a mountain one.
