Richtersveld Potjiespram 4×4 Trail
Africa's harshest mountain desert. No mercy.
The Potjiespram route cuts through the heart of the Richtersveld — South Africa’s only mountainous desert, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Nama people have grazed their livestock for centuries. The track drops from the Helskloof plateau into the Numees basin, skirting the Orange River before grinding up shale switchbacks toward Potjiespram campsite. Loose gravel over bedrock slabs, steep off-camber descents, and hidden drainage crossings keep the driver honest from the first kilometer. The landscape is savage: quiver trees split boulder fields, lappet-faced vultures circle overhead, and the silence at camp is complete.
This is genuine expert-level terrain. A stock 4WD won’t make it — you need a lifted, skid-plated rig with a snorkel, dual spares, and all recovery gear on board. Travel with at least two vehicles; there is no cell service, no rescue, and no bail-out. The park closes mid-December through February due to extreme heat. Fuel and water must be carried from Eksteenfontein or Sendelingsdrift. Book your permit and campsite through SANParks well in advance — site numbers are tight. What you get is one of the most raw, stripped-back overland experiences on the continent.

Can a stock Hilux or Patrol handle the Potjiespram Trail, or does it need to be lifted?
A stock bakkie will struggle — you need a proper lift, bash plates, and decent all-terrain tyres minimum. The rocky mountain sections will destroy low-clearance vehicles, and recovery gear is non-negotiable out here.
Is the trail open year-round, and what happens if you go in summer?
Best season is March to November. December through February brings extreme heat — 50°C+ ground temps in the Richtersveld desert are not survivable conditions for most people or vehicles. SANParks may also restrict access during peak heat.

The granite mountain climbs are where it gets real — loose rock, steep off-camber lines, and no room to chicken out. At expert difficulty across 75km of gravel, rock, and sand with 3,100ft of gain, plan for slow progress and multiple recovery situations if your group is undertrained.
There's no cell service out there — how far is the nearest fuel and water resupply from the trail?
Eksteenfontein is the nearest town but fuel availability is limited and unreliable — fill up properly in Springbok before you head out, which is roughly 200km away. Carry all your water; the Orange River crossings don't mean the water is safe to drink without filtration.
