Gibb River Road — Derby to Kununurra via the Kimberley Gorge Country
The Kimberley's raw red-dirt spine.
The Gibb River Road is the backbone of Western Australia’s Kimberley region, running roughly 660 km between Derby and Kununurra through cattle station country so remote and beautiful it genuinely resets your brain. The road itself is unsealed the entire way, a corrugated, bulldust-coated grind interrupted by side tracks to places like Bell Gorge, Manning Gorge, Emma Gorge, and the spectacular El Questro Wilderness Park. Water crossings — including the Pentecost River, which can run thigh-deep and current-heavy after rain — are the wildcard. Flood the wrong one and you’re waiting days or paying for a recovery. Fuel at Mt Barnett Roadhouse (roughly the midpoint) is non-negotiable; gaps between stops are long enough to strand an underprepared rig.
This is a high-clearance 4WD route when the crossings are running — a stock Hilux or Prado will handle it but you need good ground clearance, a snorkel for the Pentecost, two full-size spares, and a satellite communicator. The season is everything: May through September is dry season and manageable; October through April the road closes entirely when the wet season floods it out. Permits are required to access some gorges and station properties along the way. Plan 5–7 days minimum if you want to hit the gorges, not just punch through.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock Hilux or Prado handle the Gibb River Road, or do I need a built rig?
A stock high-clearance 4WD will get through in dry season, but a snorkel is non-negotiable for the river crossings. Lift and lockers help but aren't required — underbody protection and two spare tyres are more important than modifications.
When does the Gibb River Road close, and can I drive it in the wet season?
The road typically closes between November and April due to flooding — some sections become completely impassable and river crossings turn lethal. The dry season window is May through September; even in early May, check Main Roads WA conditions before you leave Derby.
Do I need permits to drive the Gibb River Road or camp along the way?
The road itself is public, but many gorges and station stays require entry fees or permits paid directly to the station or park — El Questro, Bell Gorge, and Mornington Wilderness Camp all charge access fees. Carry cash because there are no EFTPOS machines out there.
What's the hardest section of the Gibb River Road and what should I actually expect?
The corrugations between Imintji and the Barnett River Gorge stretch are relentless and will shake loose anything not properly secured or torqued. River crossings after rain — particularly the Pentecost River near the eastern end — can be axle-deep to door-deep and have claimed plenty of rigs; walk every crossing before you drive it.
How far apart are fuel stops along the Gibb River Road, and will 130L get me through?
Fuel is available at Imintji Store (roughly 290km from Derby) and El Questro near the eastern end, but supplies can run out and prices are steep — treat these as emergency backup only. A 130L total fuel capacity is the minimum you want; carry more if your rig drinks it, because 660km of corrugations will kill your economy numbers.
