Centennial Road to South Rim of the Black Canyon — Gunnison Gorge Wilderness Rim via Peach Valley
Rim access to the gorge they forgot to fence off.
Most people see the Black Canyon of the Gunnison from the paved South Rim Drive inside the national park. Fewer know that BLM land on the north side of the gorge offers raw, unfenced access to the canyon rim via Peach Valley Road out of Crawford. The Gunnison drops 2,000 feet below in places, and there are no guardrails, no crowds, and no entrance fee. The road winds through classic western Colorado scrubland — rabbitbrush, juniper, sage — before dead-ending at overlooks above sheer, dark Precambrian schist walls. The gorge here is so narrow that the river sees less than an hour of direct sunlight per day in some sections.
Peach Valley Road is well-maintained gravel passable to most vehicles in dry conditions, but the spur roads to rim overlooks require high clearance and basic 4WD. The whole corridor is open to dispersed camping with a 14-day limit — pick a flat spot back from the rim and you’ll have one of the best free camps in Colorado. Water is nonexistent out here; carry everything in. Spring and fall are ideal; summer afternoons bring thunderstorms that can make the clay roads impassable fast. Cell service is dead. This is a place that rewards people who go looking for it.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner handle this trail, or do I need a lift?
A stock high-clearance truck or SUV is fine here. The road is dirt and gravel with some rocky stretches, but nothing that demands a lift — just avoid low-slung cars and crossovers.
When is the trail actually drivable? Does it close in winter?
April through June and September through October are your windows. Winter snow and spring mud can make the Peach Valley section a greasy mess, and summer heat in this high desert is brutal. BLM doesn't formally close it, but conditions will close it for you.
Do I need a permit to drive out here or camp on the rim?
No permit required for the drive or dispersed camping on BLM land. If you're dropping into the Gunnison Gorge Wilderness on foot, wilderness regulations apply — pack it in, pack it out, Leave No Trace. No fees at time of writing, but confirm with the BLM Uncompahgre Field Office before you go.
What's the hardest section of this trail and what should I actually expect?
The roughest stretch is through the Peach Valley drainage where the road gets loose, rutted, and occasionally washed out near the rim. Nothing technically extreme, but after rain it gets slick fast and a recovery strap and traction boards are worth having in the rig.
Is there any water along the route, and how far is the nearest gas from the trailhead?
There is no reliable water source on this route — carry everything you need. Crawford is your last stop for gas and supplies, roughly 10–15 miles from the start of the road, and there's nothing else until you backtrack out.
