Lonesome Highway — Centennial Road to Dillon via the Big Hole Valley Back Road
Big sky, cold river, and a valley frozen in time.
Montana’s Big Hole Valley sits in a high basin ringed by the Beaverhead and Anaconda ranges, and the back road connecting Wisdom south through the valley to Dillon runs right through the core of it. This is the Big Hole River country — blue-ribbon trout water, hay stacks that look like something out of a 1920s photograph, and the occasional coyote crossing the road without looking both ways. The route follows BLM and county roads south from Wisdom past the Big Hole National Battlefield, where the Nez Perce fought the U.S. Army in August 1877, then continues across the valley floor through Jackson and eventually hooks into Dillon via the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway corridor. Side spurs toward the Beaverhead divide are worth exploring if you have time.
This is not a technical route — a capable stock truck handles it fine in dry conditions. The challenge is seasonal: spring runoff softens the valley floor roads significantly, and the high basin holds snow late. Best season is June through October. Fuel in Wisdom and Dillon; nothing in between. Cell service is minimal. The Big Hole National Battlefield is worth stopping for regardless of what else you do on this route. No permit required, and dispersed camping is available on adjacent BLM and Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest land.
