Tongariro Alpine Crossing Trailhead (Mangatepopo)

The Mangatepopo Road end is the western trailhead for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, consistently rated one of the best single-day hikes on earth. You’re walking across the flanks of active volcanoes Ngauruhoe and Tongariro, past the Red Crater and the famous Emerald Lakes. The carpark fills fast — and we mean fast. DOC strongly discourages driving your own vehicle here in peak season (October–April); shuttle services run from Whakapapa Village and National Park township. Toilets at the trailhead. The track itself is well-formed but alpine-exposed — conditions can flip in under an hour.

If you’re self-driving, an early arrival (pre-7am) is your best bet for a parking spot in shoulder season. No camping at the trailhead. Cell signal is spotty at best once you leave the carpark. Check DOC’s conditions page before you go — the Crossing closes periodically due to volcanic activity and weather. The terrain on the other side empties at Ketetahi; arrange a shuttle or you’re doing a long out-and-back.
