Snowy Mountains – Gungarlin River Dispersed Camp

The Gungarlin River area in the southern reaches of Kosciuszko National Park is one of NSW’s best-kept high-country secrets. Dispersed camping is permitted along the river corridor in designated zones, and the setting is exceptional — snow gum woodland, clear alpine water, and genuine solitude once you’re off the main tourist circuit. Summers bring wildflowers and cool nights; winters bring snow and locked gates. Campfires are prohibited inside the national park.

Access is via Long Plain Road and associated 4WD tracks south of Kiandra — high clearance is required and 4WD is strongly recommended once you leave the formed gravel. River crossings are water-level dependent; check conditions with NPWS Jindabyne before committing. A valid NSW National Parks pass or nightly camping fee applies — confirm current rates with the Snowy Mountains region NPWS office.
