Black Canyon Road
Arizona's gnarliest desert punishment
Black Canyon Road cuts a brutal 37-mile path from Lake Pleasant north to the old mining town of Crown King, climbing through some of Arizona’s gnarliest desert terrain. The route follows an old mining road that’s claimed more undercarriages than a Phoenix tow yard, with rock ledges that’ll test your spotter’s patience and your diff covers. The notorious “steps” around mile 15 have turned plenty of rigs into expensive modern art, while Crown King’s saloon at the end serves cold beer to those who make it intact.
This is solid intermediate to difficult territory demanding high clearance, skid plates, and recovery gear. Spring and fall offer the best weather windows — summer heat will cook you and your rig. No permits needed, but cell service is nonexistent once you’re committed. Dispersed camping is available throughout, though water sources are scarce. You’ll earn every mile of this classic Arizona punishment, but the desert views and mining history make it worth the abuse. Fuel up beforehand.
