Puracé National Park Volcanic Circuit
Active volcano circuit through Colombia's geothermal zone
The Puracé circuit winds through Colombia’s most active volcanic zone, where sulfur springs bubble along the trail and the smell of volcanic gases reminds you this mountain is very much alive. Starting from the village of Puracé, this route climbs through cloud forest before breaking into the stark páramo landscape surrounding Volcán Puracé at 4,646 meters. The trail passes the famous Termales de San Juan hot springs and offers access to the volcanic crater rim for those willing to hike the final stretch.
This is a challenging high-altitude route requiring a capable 4WD with good ground clearance and reliable brakes for the steep descents. Weather changes fast here — pack layers and rain gear regardless of season. The best window is December through March when rains are lighter, though mud and stream crossings are inevitable year-round. The reward is raw volcanic landscapes few people ever see, plus some of the most pristine páramo ecosystem in the Andes.
